University of La Verne, Irene Carlson Gallery of Photography

Edward Lance Montgomery, Biography

Edward Lance Montgomery wants to share his creations of manipulated light with you. His passion? Photographic art rendered with his signature post-production formula, creating unique and engaging yet still familiar pieces. The image making process is especially personal for him as he photographs these works in a moving vehicle. This began for him back in 2003 while he served in the Army during the war, on his last deployment to Iraq. Being how he couldn’t simply stop his convoy to take pictures, he would take pictures while on the move – hip shots or “no look” shots, if you will. Initially, the blurry images were culled from the “good” ones, but the blur intrigued him. He never stopped experimenting with blurry images, not even during his undergraduate studies as a studio art major, he kept this work to himself. The project wouldn’t even get a name until 2013 – the Kinetic Ambiguity Project. Now, you would be hard pressed to find him doing anything else.

Edward, an award-winning artist, has participated in art exhibitions, written art reviews, and curated art shows. He is a 2014 honors graduate of California State University, San Bernardino with a BA in studio art (concentration photography) and a minor in business administration. By way of a 20-year military career, Edward has lived around the world but has since returned to his home state of California. He currently lives in the high desert city of Victorville.

The Challenge

 

I do not photograph subjects as life-like images. My work is sometimes abstract and at other times impressionistic and many times both. What I’m doing is having a conversation with light, shadows, and color. In my Kinetic Ambiguity’s Land Series, Vista Segments, there is a lot of focus on what you can’t see. The challenge is often figuring out what you do see. If you look for them, you’ll notice that the landscapes have been there right in front of you, all along.

13th Biennial Ontario Open Exhibition, Opening Reception

Hey, don’t mind me. I just broke my website again. For me, WordPress is not user friendly. I even paid for services from an outside vender once. I’m never doing that again – it still hurts. I need to change subjects though. We have another group show coming up, gang! This one is in Ontario, CA and it’s free to the public. Next Saturday at 2pm. That’s May 3^rd next Saturday. I hope to see you there.

Identity

Time is just flying by. Sometimes, it’s a challenge to keep. Like keeping up with the new shows I’m in. Currently, I have two more prints in an exhibition in Livermore, CA. The show, “Identity: Defining Identity Through Visual Expression”, is currently open and runs through May 4^th. It’s a group show and free to enter. You should have a look if you get the chance to.

Felix LA Art-Fair

So, Art-Fairs.  I didn’t go to this one but I kind of wish I did because it seemed different.  I did read about it in ArtNews though.  The article; “‘Everything Feels MoreIntimate’: Felix LA Brings New Life to Art-Fair Circuit” by Janelle Zara, posted on February 15, 2019.  You should read Ms. Zara’s article because it is interesting and I’m not going to redo what she did in my post.  This is what I learned for me though – you can buy t-shirts (art t-shirts or really t-shirts with art on them) at Art-Fairs.  Which means to me, I can sell art t-shirts.  Also, this Art-Fair was held in a hotel, not a convention center or the like.  Galleries set up in rooms in the hotel.  The hotel was the Roosevelt Hotel and, from what I read, the place has a lot of history.  The article had a lot of discussions on the feel of this Art-Fair compared to the big box type of Art-Fairs.  But what I gleamed that seemed most important to me was the price ranges some of the galleries were selling art at.  For me – because I’m trying to sell work – that is useful information.  Along with that part regarding t-shirts.

44th Annual Student Art Exhibition

Well, the 44^th Annual Student Art Exhibition at the Robert and Frances Fullerton Museum of Art (RAFFMA), located on the campus of the California State University, San Bernardino, is gone forever.  There will be a 45^th but that will be for current students and I am now an alumni.  But I did manage to capture a portion of the exhibition – my stuff.  This was a tough juror too, she (AprilGreiman) rejected a lot of work.  I had tried to enter one standalone photographic print and a polyptych of ten prints from my photography.  Then I also entered two different printmaking prints.  One was a woodcut print and the other was an etching print.  None of them pleased the juror except three of the largest images of my ten piece polyptych.  So it became a triptych.  Well, at least I got something in the show, that was a plus in my book.  Enjoy.

South Hayward’s Holiday Bowl at the Space Gallery in Pomona

I went to an show opening at the Space Gallery in Pomona last Saturday – it just so happen to be the second Saturday of the month which is the Pomona Art Walk.  I have a lot of interest in the Space Gallery because I will be in a show there next month.  This current show is called Sign Geeks and basically it is a group of photographers who have a love for vintage neon signs and this is their work.  It just so happens that one of the photographers was working in the East Bay and captured the sign of the now closed Holiday Bowl.  I have many memories of that place – mostly good ones.  I spent some time hanging out there when I was in high school.  I had not known that it was closed.  Just seeing the picture brought back a flood of memories of Union City and South Hayward.  It has been a long time since I have been in the Bay Area.  I really need to get back up there.  Enjoy.

Sugar Art and Fashion Show in LA

I may have mentioned this before but I am on a quest to come current with what I am putting on this blog with my photography.  I shoot on average 3 to 4 days a week.  As long as I’m in school (Cal State, San Bernardino), I shoot film too.  I need to make digital copies of all of the film I have also but not at the moment.  I like film but I just don’t have my own dark room so I can only work with film as long as I’m a student.  I plan on setting up my own B/W darkroom in the future.  But the point is I shoot a lot.  I’m working on a few photo projects and those consume the majority of what I shoot.  But I don’t want to post what’s current until I catch up.  And that’s what I’m doing, bringing the blog up to date.  Please bear with me – some semblance of focus is coming.

Ok, the Sugar Art andFashion Show – I shot this on December 3^rd, 2010.  It was cool event and fun.  I was in Los Angeles too so I had that long ride to look forward to which is not so fun.  This Sugar Art thing is coast to coast as you can see on their website.

These are some close ups of venders/artist tables set up for the event.

Here is Nylon Pink’s table.  They are an all-girl pop band based out of LA.

And here is Kiki Wongo, the guitarist, and Kaila Yu, the lead vocalist.  The rest of Nylon Pink (I didn’t capture them with my camera) are Katt Lee on bass, drummer Jamie Scoles, and Yuki Ito on keyboards.  They were supposed to perform but something went awry and they weren’t able to.  A brief interview and brief shoot was the reason I went out there in the first place but it still all turned out well.  I’ll get a shoot with them one day.

Then, for reasons I didn’t quite understand, we had to all move outside for a few moments.  I mean everybody in the building.

There were a lot of photographers here too.  Everywhere I turned I saw one.  Some had some really hi-end gear.  That’s my envy coming to the surface.

Then we were back in and everything was cool again.

I love large (mural) prints.  I want to print some of my photos this large.  These were cool.

18 photos – aperture, shutter speed and ISO set by the camera again because I was shooting in program mode - again.  As usual at night, I set the ISO at 1600.  And as I do the majority of the time, I shot this all with my kit lens, EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS, on my Canon EOS Rebel XS.  Alright!  Another post on the blog!  I’m eye-ballin’ Friday already.
